Wolfsburg midfielder Makoto Hasebe says he and his team-mates owe it to their fans to win their final Bundesliga match of the year against Stuttgart tomorrow.Japan international Hasebe returns from suspension for the game which he says "must be won at all costs''.
"We have not played well this season so far and I am particularly sorry for the fans who have nevertheless supported us incredibly,'' he said on his club's website.
"We want to win for the fans so that we can go into the new year in a positive state of mind.
"It is our last home game of the year and it must be won at all costs.''
Indeed, if the Wolves lose for the 10th time this season, they could find themselves spending the winter break inside the bottom three of the Bundesliga.
That is something their coach Felix Magath will not even begin to contemplate.
"You can see clearly in training that the team is aware of the situation,'' he said.
"They want to make it more bearable with this final game of the first half of the season and have a happier winter break.
"I therefore expect us to end the first half of the season with a good performance.''
That is precisely what Stuttgart coach Bruno Labbadia is also looking for, especially after an alarming run of six points in seven games.
"We are going to have to raise our game to get the three points,'' he said.
"We have worked very well in recent weeks and months, but we have a few points less than we should have.
"With five points more, 2011 would have been a very good year.''
Although his side cannot reach that goal, three points at the VW-Arena would certainly leave them in a good position to challenge for a top-six finish in 2012.
