Werder Bremen full-back Lukas Schmitz is looking forward to returning to Gelsenkirchen tomorrow and insists he does not bear a grudge against his former club Schalke.Schmitz was a regular for the Royal Blues for the first half of last season, but he lost his place when Ralf Rangnick took charge and subsequently joined Bremen last summer.
Tomorrow, he returns to the Arena AufSchalke for the first time since leaving the city and he is looking for all three points for Bremen, but not because of the way he was practically forced out of the club just a few months ago.
"I wouldn't say it was painful (leaving),'' he told the Kreiszeitung Syke newspaper.
"It was nothing to do with the environment there and I got on like a house on fire with their general manager Horste Heldt, but you could say I had no relationship at all with the coach at the time.
"I had played every game under Felix Magath and it was clear to me that I did not want to take any steps backwards, but then we had talks and it was soon clear that my future lied elsewhere.
"That is what made up my mind, and therefore my departure was not difficult.
"I had two great years with Schalke and I left with a good feeling - there was never any controversy.''
Schmitz is now happy with Bremen, for whom he has made 13 appearances so far this season.
"I am now feeling very happy in Bremen,'' he said. "We have played great at home this season, but unfortunately that has not often been the case away from home.
"We need to change in the second half of the season, and why not tomorrow already.
"We can break through the 30-point mark and that would be fantastic.''
Schmitz should keep his place in an unchanged side with Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf able to select from a fully-fit squad for practically the first time all season.
There is a question mark hanging over the fitness of Schalke midfielder Lewis Holtby while Christian Fuchs, who has taken Schmitz's place in the Schalke side this season, may also miss out with muscular problems.
"We are going to have to be patient,'' said Schalke coach Huub Stevens on his club's website.
"Bremen have quick and dangerous attackers and we cannot let them hit us on the counter-attack.''
