Brest winger Romain Poyet is convinced the club will improve their fortunes following the winter break, but admits a win over Auxerre tomorrow is vital to provide them with a launchpad.Coach Alex Dupont's side have endured a remarkable first half of the Ligue 1 campaign to date, waiting until the 12th game before finally recording a win after drawing nine of their first 11 matches.
Two wins have since followed, but Brest lie a perilous two points above the relegation zone going into the game with Auxerre at the Stade Francis-Le Ble where they are unbeaten in eight this season.
Poyet, however, believes a 20-point haul from the first half of the campaign is something that could not be sniffed at given the problems they have had to endure to date.
With an away fixture at Toulouse looming on Wednesday before the French league shuts down for nearly four weeks, Brest have so far collected 17 points.
Poyet said: "A win against Auxerre is imperative, and if we get it, it will give us much hope for the future.
"If we have reached 20 points following the game with Auxerre, even with an away game to come, that will be really positive.
"In particular as we have had to reshuffle our defence because of injuries and suspensions, so if we do get 20 points then that is really not too bad.
"I feel we are strong and I think we'll have a better second half of the season.
"Although we are happy the break is coming, we know there are still two important games with things to do, and we will.''
Dupont still has six players sidelined through injury, although it is in midfield where his troubles now lie as Braham Ferradji, Jhon Jairo Culma, Diallo Guidileye and Yoann Bigne are all out.
In addition, Dupont also has defender Ahmed Kantara and striker Jonathan Ayite sidelined.
Auxerre, one point and three places above Brest, but without a win on the road this season from eight games, have seven-goal midfielder Alain Traore out with a knee injury.
However, fellow midfielder Edouard Cisse is included in the 18-strong squad after seven weeks out with a thigh problem.
"I am pleased to see my team-mates again,'' said Cisse.
"I do not know if I will play or if I will be on the bench, but it is an important step in the process for me in returning to competition.''
