Nancy defender Reynald Lemaitre has described his club's current crisis as "alarming'' ahead of tomorrow's clash with former team Caen.Nancy endured a disastrous start to the Ligue 1 campaign with a run of 10 matches without a win before claiming three victories in four, including a shock 1-0 triumph at title-chasing Paris St Germain.
However, it required a last-minute strike from Daniel Niculae last Saturday to avoid what would have been a third successive defeat, instead salvaging a point from a 2-2 home draw with bottom-of-the-table Ajaccio.
Lemaitre insists a point will not be good enough against Caen as they seek to salvage some pride from their two remaining matches - the other at home to Marseille on Tuesday - before the Christmas break.
"The championship is like a marathon, but we're now at the halfway mark and the situation is alarming,'' said Lemaitre, who played for Caen from 2003 to 2009.
"To take a point from this game would be useless, whilst a victory would allow us to breathe a little.''
The bottom half of the table is incredibly congested, with 18th-placed Nancy just five points adrift of 10th-placed Bordeaux.
Despite their own problems, Nancy face a Caen side who have lost their last three matches to drop to 12th, with only four points separating the clubs.
Lemaitre, however, has warned of the dangers faced by Caen at the Stade Michel d'Ornano as he said: "I know this team and it's never a good time to play them.
"That's because they can have two faces. If they wake up against us then it could be very painful.
"But they also love the game and always want to win. This means they can leave spaces for the opponent to counter.
"This may be their weak point, but when they are fit, they can beat anyone.''
Coach Jean Fernandez will be without injured duo Massadio Haidara and Bakaye Traore, the latter due to a back problem sustained this week.
As for Caen, striker Livio Nabob and midfielder Gregory Proment are suspended.
Fellow midfielder Benjamin Nivet knows it is time for Caen "to bounce back now'' following their recent woeful run.
Nivet said: "If we beat Nancy it would put us in good stead for the rest of the season.
"Against teams like Nancy, points really count, so this match is of great importance.
"We still have two games before the break (the other is at Lorient on Wednesday), so we must give everything we have to snatch the points.''
