Rock-bottom Excelsior made the perfect start but were pegged back by ADO Den Haag for a result which did neither side many favours.
Leen van Steensel put the Rotterdam club in front in the second minute but the visitors hit back just before the hour mark through Jens Toornstra.
The draw meant Excelsior are now unbeaten in three Eredivisie games and lifted them off the bottom of the table, above VVV-Venlo on goal difference. For ADO, they are only three points above the bottom three and have failed to win any of their last four matches.
Excelsior took charge early on when Kevin Jansen broke into the left-hand side of the box and found Van Steensel close to the penalty spot, and although he failed to make a good connection with his shot ADO goalkeeper Gino Coutinho went the wrong way.
The home side were under threat after 25 minutes when Toornstra's free-kick almost found the head of Charlton Vicento, but Excelsior were able to scramble the ball clear for a corner.
Vicento then failed to connect properly with a shot after bringing down a high ball and turning away from the home defence, with Wesley de Ruiter easily gathering his effort.
The same player then flashed an effort just wide from long range and on the stroke of half-time De Ruiter was able to deflect away a powerful shot from Mike van Duinen, with Samuel Scheimann able to hack the ball clear.
Van Duinen was denied again early in the second period when, after a long spell of ADO possession, his shot was cleared off the line by Scheimann.
At the other end, Norichio Nieveld headed over Roland Alberg's cross from close range in the 56th minute.
ADO levelled three minutes later when Marc Hocher's shot was spilled by De Ruiter and Toornstra fired home the rebound through a forest of legs which left the Excelsior goalkeeper unsighted.
Things almost got worse for Excelsior when Tjarron Chery found space on the right-hand side of the box but fired his shot into the side-netting and Toornstra then drove a 25-yard strike over the top with nine minutes to go.
Excelsior finished the stronger, as Van Steensel's cross was just cleared away from the onrushing Alberg by Ahmed Ammi and then Alberg's long-range free-kick struck the top of the crossbar. source: http://soccernet.espn.go.com
