FC Twente are seven points behind Eredivisie leaders AZ Alkmaar following a goalless draw against Vitesse Arnhem.
The hosts showed little ingenuity and could not find a way past a well-organised Vitesse defence to sit third in the table, four points behind second-placed PSV Eindhoven.
There were no openings in the first quarter of an hour with Vitesse the first to create a chance with almost 20 minutes gone.
Wilfried Bony pounced on a short backpass and attempted to lob goalkeeper Nikolay Mihaylov but the ball went into the side-netting.
The hosts then engineered a clear opportunity but Luuk de Jong headed Nacer Chadli's free-kick wide when in front of goal.
On the stroke of half-time, Chadli went past three Vitesse defenders into the area but his shot was weak and was easily gathered by goalkeeper Piet Velthuizen.
Chadli was at the centre of Twente's attacks and 12 minutes into the second half he controlled the ball from De Jong in the area and shot forcing Velthuizen to save.
Vitesse sent a warning to Twente, Valeri Kazaishvili shooting just wide, before Chadli again threatened with a volley the keeper was forced to save.
With just four minutes left, Bony squandered a great chance when he shot straight at the keeper before team-mate Alexander Buttner opted to shoot when Bony was free to no avail.
Vitesse were carving out opportunities at the end and again they took the wrong option, Giorgi Chanturia choosing to shoot when Bony was in space.
Velthuizen comfortably saved a Wout Brama free-kick in injury-time but Twente had to settle for a point. source: http://soccernet.espn.go.com
