Man of the Match Jake Kean saved two penalties as advanced Rochdale around the Johnstone Paint Trophy third after beating Walsall on penalties.
The contest ended 1-1 after 90 minutes and the hosts was superior from the point, the conversion of three shots, while Richard Kevan Hurst Taundry saddlers and saw his efforts saved and Ryan Jarvis blazed over the crossbar.
After a first half of limited possibilities, Rochdale took the lead four minutes after the interval in an effort to Jason Kennedy was accused by David Ball and reacted quickly, miscuing a shot that flew into the top corner of the net.
Ball had a great chance to double his account when he raced clear of the half after a mistake by Andy Butler just rubbing his effort wide safe. The hosts had to pay for the missed opportunity in Walsall leveled on 66 minutes. Kevan Hurst was ahead of his marker to meet David Martin cross and sweep the ball from eight yards.
Kean kept out a powerful shot from Martin, while Alex Nicholls was unable to find a finish to match its superb weaving run through the ranks as Walsall Rochdale step up a gear.
But the home team ended the ball hard and Nicky Adams goes by - in the extreme heroism Kean was decisive.
