Greece took a huge step towards securing their place in next year's European Championship with a 2-0 win over Croatia in Group F tonight.
The home team came into the game a point behind their rivals, but he knew that a win would leave them needing only a point away to Georgia on Tuesday to qualify top of group.
And that's exactly what they accomplished in an evening marked by crowd trouble just three minutes after kick-off with a suspended game for six minutes before continuing.
Georgios Samaras scored in the 70th minute and Theofanis Gekas secured the three points eight minutes later.
Greece are unbeaten with six wins and three draws in nine matches giving them a two point lead over Croatia in the top of the group.
The problem in the stands perhaps contributed to a slow start in the field with Eduardo of Croatia with the first meaningful effort after 20 minutes with a shot from 20 yards that was tipped around the post by Alexandros Tzorvas.
At the other end Socratis Papastathopoulos also tried his luck from distance but saw his opportunity in the hands of Stipe Pletikosa.
Clear chances were hard to get and Mario Mandzukic was the next player to shoot long distance, only to shoot over the crossbar.
The best chance of the first half fell to Avraam Papadopoulos, but his close range header was saved by Pletikosa.
A goalless draw was looking the most likely outcome is that until Samaras found a space in the area of home fire from 12 yards and open the scoring.
Gekas and sealed the victory shortly after home right-foot Giorgos Karagounis' cross.
