The world is billing it as Ronaldo versus Ibrahimovic but for these two nations it is more than an exhibition of a world class pairing, their World Cup hopes rest solely on the outcome of this nail biting two-legged affair, which kicks-off on Friday night in Lisbon.
Having been in Group C alongside Germany, Sweden knew that automatic qualification would be a tall order and have subsequently had 18 months to prepare themselves for the anxieties of play-off. For Portugal though, this comes as an unexpected predicament as they finished behind the less favoured Russia.
In fact, it was only Portugal’s failure to beat lowly Israel at home which has prevented Paulo Bento’s side from automatic qualification. That costly slip up allowed Capello’s men to top the group, condemning the Portuguese to this unenviable fate.
Worse still for Portugal, Cristiano Ronaldo had to miss training on Tuesday as he nurses a foot injury that could yet keep him out of Friday’s encounter. Even if he is deemed fit to play, the knock could impact his performance and that would spell disaster for Bento’s side.
Ronaldo is everything to Portugal right now. He is there captain, their talisman, their inspiration. Without him you can’t help but wonder how the likes of Nani will cope, particular in such a high-profiled and important fixture. Obviously losing arguably the world’s greatest talent would hinder any team but with Portugal the loss of their biggest star would probably hand Sweden the advantage.
However, Ronaldo has been scoring 50+ goals a season for half a decade and that doesn’t happen if you are an injury prone individual. The chances are that he will be fine, which can only be good for neutrals as well as his country.
Sweden won’t lie down though and are a very capable outfit, just ask England. Whilst Ibrahimovic is rightfully idolised as their poster boy, the entire squad is full of talented players and it is hard to accuse them of being a one man team.
Both nations will feel that they should be at the World Cup next year and ideally most neutrals would like to have seen both in attendance. Unfortunately, that is no longer a possibility and one of the planet’s best players will be stuck on a beach next June. The bookies have priced this strongly in Portugal’s favour and whilst they would probably be more likely to reach the latter stages (should they qualify) you can’t help but feel Sweden have been done a slight injustice by those odds.
It could be a really close affair and may be settled by a moment of brilliance. I certainly wouldn’t like to predict the outcome. However, I do think both Ronaldo and Ibrahimovic will take their chance should it present itself. It should be a cracker for the neutral.
