At the start of the season, many tipped Wigan for the drop and their form in the opening weeks did not suggest anything else could happen. However, after a 3-3 draw with Blackburn, they have won two of their three games and look like putting together a mini-revival.It is one that has been built, somewhat surprisingly, on away form rather than the comforts of the DW. In fact, the Latics have taken just one point from the last 15 available at home. Not the most solid of foundations, which is made worse by the fact that their next three games are against Chelsea, Liverpool and Man Utd.
The form of midfielder Jordi Gomez has helped lift Wigan and he has scored in three of his last four Premier League appearances. However, against the Blues, the stats do not make pretty reading as Wigan have won just one and lost 10 of 12 league meetings with Chelsea.
Any hopes that Martinez may have will also be crushed by the fact that the Londoners have scored 15 goals without reply in their last three outings. Indeed, with a defence that has failed to keep a clean sheet in their last 12 Premier League games, it could be one-way traffic.
Chelsea have seemingly rectified the defensive problems that were haunting them earlier this season and halted a run of one clean sheet in just ten away games to stop the bleeding in their last two road trips. Manager Andre Villas-Boas may be taking attention away from the Blues' performances with his ill-timed rants against the media, but it is impossible not to notice how Chelsea, and Didier Drogba in particular, are rolling back the years since the damaging double defeat to Liverpool in the league and Carling Cup in late-November.
It is a time of year when the games come thick and fast, and season aspirations can be accurately measured once the dust has settled. Chelsea will be confident that after their trip to the DW, some will start to view them in a different light once more
