Paris Saint-Germain 4 - 2 Athletic Bilbao 14th Dec 2011 Story
Big-spending Paris St Germain were sent crashing out of the Europa League despite snatching a late home win over a much-changed Athletic Bilbao tonight.
An Inigo Perez own goal and Guillaume Horau's penalty in the final five minutes sealed the win, but the capital club failed to go through after Salzburg came from two goals down to win 3-2 at Slovan Bratislava.
PSG were one of the favourites for the tournament following the summer investment of their new Qatari owners, but their early exit is likely to heap more pressure on boss Antoine Kombouare.
They had been on course to go through when first-half goals from Javier Pastore and Mathieu Bodmar cancelled out Jon Aurtenetxe's second-minute header.
At that stage Salzburg were drawing 2-2 in Slovakia but when they went ahead early in the second half, PSG's progress was out of the hands.
Athletic, who made seven changes with their place at the top of Group F already assured, then equalised through David Lopez on 54 minutes, before PSG at least got the consolation of victory with their two late goals.
PSG's hopes of progressing were immediately set back as the visitors opened the scoring in just the second minute. Teenage defender Aurtenetxe headed in David Lopez's corner, although PSG roared back to take the lead before half-time.
Summer signing Pastore equalised on 21 minutes when he turned in Jean-Cristophe Bahebeck's assist, and PSG continued to pepper the away goal for the remainder of the half.
Eventually the pressure told and PSG grabbed the lead just before half-time. Nene swung in a corner that Bodmar got on the end of to head in from 12 yards.
At half-time PSG were heading into the knockout stage, with Salzburg drawing 2-2 at Slovan Bratislava, but the dynamic shifted within 10 minutes of the restart.
Just moments after Salzburg forged ahead in Slovakia, PSG conceded a 54th-minute equaliser when Lopez curled in a 35-yard strike.
It left PSG needing the Slovakians to equalise, a task they could not complete, meaning the French side were sent crashing out despite claiming victory on the night late on
