Europa League Group J leaders Schalke were brought back down to earth with a goalless stalemate at home to lowly AEK Larnaca.

Schalke manager Huub Stevens had warned his players top table should not be taken lightly despite having defeated AEK the Cypriots 5-0 two weeks ago.

They ignored his warning, however, an austere interpretation that one point was added to the seven who had previously won, while AEK doubled its number of two points with the result in the Veltins Arena.

Schalke started brightly as Julian Draxler drilled a powerful effort goalwards Marco Fortin fully stretched to the point of the entire message.

Gregoor van Dijk crashed again and again at 16 minutes earlier, at the other end, the speculative effort Klaas Jan Huntelaar is the distance went wide of the goal.

Schalke striker Jose Manuel Jurado opened a great shot on 26 minutes before Christian went Kyriakos Papadopoulos Fuchs' free kick wide.

AEK had another raid on the half hour mark as Priso Njonga forced a smart save with his right Unnerstall Lars shot.

Tim de Cler saw a shot blocked by visitors before Gonzalo Garcia was denied by Unnerstall save moments later.

Joel Matip half had failed to capitalize on opportunity.

Stevens sent Lewis Holtby and Jefferson Farfan after a lackluster opening to the second half and Holtby nearly had a rapid impact on his left foot effort was blocked by Fortin.

Garcia had a shot from AEK which was once again Unnerstall, same as above, on the other end, Draxler opened a shot over.

Huntelaar headed wide from a cross of Farfan as Schalke continued to press.

Papadopoulos should have done better with a header that caught Fortin AEK Priso comfortably before kick forced a perforated cap Unnerstall as Schalke to safety.

The winner should have come with less than two minutes left, but somehow managed to head Matip closer and there was still time for AEK with Priso approach shot wide and Michael Prodromou more shot.
