Later goals from Edmar, Papa Gueye and Jose Sosa confirmed the home side's victory, but there is still a glimmer of hope for the Austrians after group rivals AZ Alkmaar were held to a shock goalless draw in Malmo.
The visitors faced a tall order against their in-form opponents, who pressed from the start with Cristian Villagra flashing the first shot wide after just 44 seconds, and Sosa and Villagra again coming close.
Nacer Barazite had the visitors' first chance in the 12th minute which he fired wide, and seven minutes later the home side had the lead when Devic lashed a right-foot shot high in the net from a Sosa cross.
However the visitors hit back within two minutes, Florian Mader seizing the chance to level with a left-foot shot into the top corner of the net after Florian Klein had set him up from the right wing.
Devic, Ribeiro and Villagra all had shots blocked in the box as the home side pressed for another goal, but Vienna also had chances with Tomas Jun flashing a long-range effort over the bar.
Edmar finally put the home side back in front five minutes before the break when he stroked home from 12 yards after picking up Devic's inch-perfect cross from the left wing.
Vienna pressed at the start of the second half with Metalist goalkeeper Vladimir Disljenkovic punching a Mader effort over the bar and then pulling off a fine save to deny Zlatko Junuzovic.
But Gueye extended the home side's lead on the hour when he met an outswinging corner from Sosa to power home a header from point-blank range and put Metalist within sight of the knockout stages.
Jun twice came close for the visitors, but the home side wrapped up their emphatic victory two minutes from time when Sosa netted from 12 yards after a cross from the right by Ribeiro.
