Chris Hughton is prepared for the most testing examination of Birmingham's Europa League credentials to date as they enter what he describes as the "pivotal'' stages in Group H with tomorrow's clash at Braga.
Blues, Braga and Club Brugge are all tied on seven points at the summit of the table, the tightest of all 12 in this year's competition, with NK Maribor stranded adrift with just one to their name.
The permutations are endless ahead of the clash at Estadio Municipal de Braga although City's chances of progression would receive a hefty blow should they taste defeat to their Portuguese rivals, who would book one of two qualifying spots in the knockout stages based on their head-to-head record and a 3-1 victory at St Andrew's on matchday one.
But Hughton's side have reason to be confident against last season's runners-up in this competition having themselves thrived, arguably more than some would have predicted, in Europe and racked up impressive wins away at Brugge and Maribor.
Asked whether he believes tomorrow poses the most difficult fixture in Birmingham's European campaign, Hughton replied: "I think so, because of the stage of the group also.
"With only two games left we're now very much in the pivotal moments of the competition in this group.
"We're up against a team who when the group was announced most people felt were favourites to win because of the pedigree they have.
"So I think this is going to be our sternest test.''
In his press conference this morning, Braga Leonardo Jardim anticipated a defensive Birmingham side who will look to counter-attack.
"I'm not sure the Portuguese coach knows our tactics,'' replied Hughton when this was put to him this evening.
"The important thing for us is we know we're up against a very good Braga team, a very competitive Braga team and a very offensive Braga team.
"What we have to do is work the best way we can to nullify some of the qualities they have but also know we have to be a threat ourselves.
"It's impossible to defend for 90 minutes.''
Jardim's side are struggling for form having won just three of their last 10 games in all competitions and are missing a total of 10 players due to injury or ineligibility, most notably right-back Baiano and striker Carlao.source
