report:
Switzerland is left wondering what might have been after completing their qualifying campaign for Euro 2012 with a Pyrrhic victory over Montenegro.
In the second half with goals from Stephan Lichtsteiner Eren Derdiyok and decided the game, but it was too little too late to pip their opponents Swiss second place in Group G after the contrast results for the couple on Friday.
While Swiss crash to a 2-0 defeat in Wales four days ago, Montenegro were fighting back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with England - and that moment was all that separated the two candidates play-off in the final standings following result tonight.
Switzerland, whose loss was Wales qualifies for the European Championship for the first time since 2000, started well in Basel and in the first 30 minutes Valon Behrami and Eren Derdiyok were denied by goalkeeper Mladen Bozovic Gokhan Inler and while every effort Xherdan Shaqiri shot out.
Montenegro briefly threatened on 31 minutes when Dejan Damjanovic shot turned around the post by Diego Benaglio, but the action soon returned to the other end of the pitch with Mehmedi (three times) and Behrami both trying their luck in search of opening goal before halftime.
The Swiss, who lost 1-0 in Montenegro in qualifying before finally advancing six minutes after the break when Derdiyok shot from 12 meters away.
Montenegro was almost immediately an equalizer when the shot was rejected by Radomir Djalovic Diego Benaglio, but apart from that it was the Swiss, who seemed the most likely to add the marker, which duly did in the 65th minute.
Lichtsteiner latched onto a pass near the top right corner of the area and drilled a low shot past Bozovic at the corner of the net to seal a deserved win which could have been even higher if the hosts had made the most of new opportunities in the closing laps.
