Italy welcomed Serbia in Belgrade with a draw tonight to remain unbeaten in qualifying and dented the hopes of his rivals to play at Euro 2012.
Needing a victory to earn a spot in the play-offs, the hosts got off to worst possible start in Italy, Claudio Marchisio took the lead after 56 seconds.
Branislav Ivanovic Chelsea defender equalized on 26 minutes, Serbia had several opportunities to go forward, but were denied by Gianluigi Buffon saves well.
The result in the Crvena Zvezda Stadium, along with Estonia's 2-1 win over Northern Ireland in the other group C game, Serbia fell to the third, one point behind Estonia that have played all their games.
Serbia must now win their final qualifier with Slovenia on October 11 to reach the play-offs.

Zoran Tosic sent the ball into the area controlled Ivanovic back to goal, turned and fired into the back of the net.
The goal inspired the hosts, who could have gone ahead before the break.
Krasic beat his marker and came inside the area but gave a weak effort was cleared by a defender.
Serbia took up where they left after the restart and almost went ahead early in the second half.
Kolarov powerful free-kick at the near post was maintained by Buffon.
Buffon was called back to make an important stop in the 53rd minute to keep out efforts Kolarov diagonal.
Shortly after the hour mark, southpaw Antonio Cassano strike from the edge of the area was rejected by the distance Jorgacevic.
At the other extreme, Marko Pantelic has his head in Ivanovic's cross but his effort went over the crossbar.

Serbian captain, Dejan Stankovic insisted his team will appear confident at home to Italy in European Championship qualifying on Friday.
